The Body's Super Sweeper: Our Amazing Excretory System!
Hi there! Did you know your body has its very own cleaning crew? Just like we clean our house to get rid of trash, our body needs to get rid of waste to stay healthy. The system that does this big cleaning job is called the Excretory System!
What Does It Do?
Imagine you drink water and eat food. Your body uses the good stuff, but there are leftovers and waste products it doesn't need. The excretory system collects this waste from your blood and removes it from your body, mostly as pee (urine)!
Meet the Kidneys!
The star players of this system are your two kidneys! They are shaped like beans and are located near your back, below your ribs. Think of them as super filters.
Activity: Make a Kidney Filter!
Let's see how a filter works, just like your kidneys!
- Mix the 'Dirty Blood': Fill the large jar about halfway with water. Add a spoonful of sand/dirt, a few small pebbles, and a pinch of salt. Stir it up! This represents the blood carrying different kinds of waste.
- Set up the Filter: Place the funnel over the empty clear cup. Put the coffee filter or a piece of cheesecloth inside the funnel. This is our model 'kidney'.
- Filter the Waste: Carefully pour the 'dirty water' from the jar through the funnel and filter into the empty cup.
- Observe: Look at the filter. What stayed behind? (The sand and pebbles). Look at the water that dripped into the cup. It looks cleaner, right? (Though the salt dissolved, like some wastes dissolve in water to become urine).
How It Relates to Your Body:
Your real kidneys filter your blood, taking out waste products and extra water to make urine. The 'clean' blood goes back to circulate in your body.
- Kidneys: The filter in our activity.
- Ureters: Tiny tubes that carry the urine from the kidneys down to the bladder (like the funnel directs the water).
- Bladder: A stretchy bag that holds the urine until you're ready to go to the bathroom (like the cup collecting the filtered water).
- Urethra: The tube that carries urine out of your body when you pee.
Why Drink Water?
Water is super important! It helps your kidneys flush out the waste. If you don't drink enough water, it's harder for your kidneys to do their cleaning job properly. So, drink up!
Wrap-up Fun!
- Can you name the main filtering organs? (Kidneys!)
- What does the excretory system remove? (Waste!)
- Why is drinking water good for your kidneys? (Helps them flush waste!)
- Draw a picture of your body's cleaning crew: the kidneys, bladder, and the tubes connecting them! You can label the parts.
Great job learning about your amazing excretory system today!
