Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand the basic biology of a pumpkin and its life cycle.
Materials and Prep
- A pumpkin
- A knife (to be used by an adult)
- A spoon
- A magnifying glass (optional)
Please make sure to have adult supervision for using the knife.
Activities
- Observe the pumpkin: Start by examining the pumpkin's exterior. Notice its color, shape, and size. Use the magnifying glass to get a closer look if you have one.
- Explore the inside: With the help of an adult, carefully cut open the pumpkin. Take a spoon and scoop out the seeds and stringy pulp. Discuss the different parts you find.
- Seed investigation: Separate some of the seeds from the pulp and set them aside. Examine the seeds using your senses. How do they look, feel, and smell?
- Planting the seeds: Find a small pot or container and fill it with soil. Plant a few pumpkin seeds in the soil, making sure to water them regularly. Observe and record any changes you notice over time.
