Materials Needed:

  • A simple, age-appropriate retelling or excerpt from a Harry Potter book (or a picture book about fantasy/wizards).
  • A hat (to act as a Sorting Hat).
  • A craft stick or pointer (to be a "magic wand").
  • Paper or whiteboard and markers.
  • Sight word flashcards (include words like 'the', 'a', 'is', 'he', 'she', 'wand', 'hat', 'read', 'book', 'magic').

Lesson Activities:

Welcome, Young Wizard! (5 mins)

Let's pretend to go to Hogwarts! First, we need the Sorting Hat to choose our reading house. Close your eyes!

(Place the hat on the student's head)

"Ah, yes! I see bravery and a love for stories! You belong in the house of... Super Readers!"

Magic Words Practice (10 mins)

Every wizard needs to know magic words! These are our sight words for today. Let's use our magic wand to tap each word as we say it.

(Show sight word flashcards one by one. Practice reading them together. Make it fun - maybe flick the 'wand' for each word.)

Can you make a silly sentence using one of our magic words? Like "The magic hat is reading!"

Reading Adventure Time (15-20 mins)

Now, let's read a story about a famous wizard, Harry Potter! We'll use our magic reading wand to follow the words.

(Read the simplified Harry Potter story/excerpt aloud together. Pause frequently.)

  • Ask Questions: "Who is this character?" (Point to Harry/Ron/Hermione). "Where are they right now? What tells you that?" (Setting). "What just happened in this part of the story?" (Plot).
  • Character Spotting: "Use your Eagle Eyes! Can you spot the name 'Harry' on this page? Point to it with your wand!"
  • Setting Sketch: Let's quickly draw where Harry is in this part of the story. Is he in a castle? A forest? Under the stairs?

Story Potions (5-10 mins)

Let's brew a potion to remember our story! We need the right ingredients.

(Draw a large cauldron on the paper/whiteboard.)

"First ingredient: Who was the main character?" (Write student's answer - Harry). "Next ingredient: Where did the story happen?" (Write setting). "Final ingredient: What was one important thing that happened?" (Write simple plot point).

"Great job! We brewed a perfect Story Potion!"

Wrap Up (2 mins)

You were a fantastic reader today! Just like a real wizard practicing spells, we practiced our reading skills. What was your favorite part of our reading adventure?
