Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to apply arithmetic skills to solve math problems related to dogs.
Materials and Prep
- Pencil
- Blank paper
No prior knowledge or preparation is required for this lesson.
Activities
-
Activity 1: Dog Treats
Ask the student to imagine they are a dog trainer and they have a bag of dog treats. Tell them that each dog treat is worth 5 points. Ask them to calculate how many points they would have if they had 8 dog treats.
-
Activity 2: Dog Walk
Explain to the student that they are taking their dog for a walk. Ask them to calculate the distance they would cover if they walked 0.5 miles every day for a week (7 days).
-
Activity 3: Dog Ages
Discuss with the student that dogs age differently than humans. Ask them to calculate how old a dog would be in dog years if it is 3 years old in human years. Explain that the conversion is 1 human year equals 7 dog years.
Fifth Grade Talking Points
- "Arithmetic is the branch of mathematics that deals with numbers and their operations."
- "In Activity 1, we used multiplication to calculate the total points of dog treats. Multiplication is a way to add equal groups of numbers together."
- "In Activity 2, we used multiplication to calculate the total distance walked in a week. Multiplying the distance walked each day by the number of days gives us the total distance."
- "In Activity 3, we used multiplication to convert a dog's age from human years to dog years. We multiplied the dog's age in human years by 7 to get the equivalent age in dog years."
