Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand what hangnails are and how to prevent them.

Materials and Prep

  • Magnifying glass (optional)
  • Hand mirror (optional)
  • Pencil and paper

No prior knowledge or preparation is required for this lesson.

Activities

  1. Introduction: Start by asking the student if they have ever had a hangnail and what it feels like. Discuss their experiences and explain that hangnails are small pieces of skin that can peel away from the sides of our nails.
  2. Observation: Encourage the student to examine their own nails using a magnifying glass or hand mirror. Ask them to look for any signs of hangnails and describe what they see.
  3. Discussion: Explain that hangnails can be caused by dry skin or picking at the skin around the nails. Discuss the importance of keeping our hands clean and moisturized to prevent hangnails.
  4. Prevention Tips: Provide the student with simple strategies to prevent hangnails, such as regularly applying hand lotion, avoiding biting or picking at the skin around the nails, and keeping nails trimmed and filed.
  5. Art Activity: Have the student draw a picture of a hand with healthy nails and label the different parts, including the nail, cuticle, and surrounding skin. Encourage them to include a happy face on their hand to represent good nail care habits.
