Thimble Summer Adventure: Diving into Chapter 3!

Materials Needed:

  • Copy of 'Thimble Summer' by Elizabeth Enright
  • Notebook or reading journal
  • Pen or pencil
  • Optional: Colored pencils or markers, plain paper
  • Optional: Access to online map tools or atlas (for depicting the setting)

Lesson Activities:

  1. Warm-up Chat (5 minutes):

Let's talk about Chapter 2 briefly. What big event happened? What are you predicting might happen now that the drought seems to be over? What does Garnet hope for?

  2. Reading Aloud/Silent Reading (15-20 minutes):

Read Chapter 3, "The Fair". You can read it aloud, take turns reading sections, or read it silently to yourself. Pay attention to what Garnet does, who she meets, and where the action takes place.

  3. Comprehension Check & Character Focus (10-15 minutes):

In your notebook, answer these questions, or we can discuss them together:

    • What is the main event happening in this chapter?
    • Describe Garnet's experience at the fair. What does she see and do?
    • How does Garnet feel during the events of this chapter? Find a sentence or two from the text that shows her feelings.
    • Who is Citronella? What is Garnet's first impression of her?
    • What important item does Garnet find (or almost lose!) in this chapter?
  4. Setting Spotlight (10 minutes):

Chapter 3 takes us to the fair! How does the author describe the fair? What words make it seem exciting, busy, or maybe a bit overwhelming? Discuss how the setting of the fair affects Garnet's actions and feelings. Optional Activity: Draw a simple map or a picture of a scene from the fair based on the descriptions in the book.

  5. Making Connections (5-10 minutes):

Have you ever been to a fair or a similar large, busy event? What did it feel like? How was your experience similar to or different from Garnet's? Does reading about Garnet's day make you think about anything in your own life?

  6. Wrap-up & Looking Ahead (5 minutes):

What was the most interesting part of Chapter 3 for you? What do you think might happen next, especially with Citronella introduced? Let's get ready for Chapter 4 next time!

Notes for Homeschool Context:

This one-on-one setting allows for flexibility. Adjust reading time as needed. Dive deeper into discussion points that capture the student's interest. The optional creative activities provide differentiation and cater to different learning preferences.

Assessment:

Understanding will be assessed through the quality of answers during discussion, the completeness and thoughtfulness of notebook responses, and participation in the activities. Observation of reading fluency (if reading aloud) can also be noted.
