Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to explore the connection between music and dogs, and create a musical composition inspired by dogs.
Materials and Prep
- Pen and paper
- Access to a computer or tablet with internet
- Optional: Musical instruments (if available)
Before starting the lesson, make sure the student has a basic understanding of different dog breeds and their characteristics.
Activities
-
Research and List: Have the student research different dog breeds known for their musical talents such as howling or barking in a melodic way. Instruct them to make a list of at least five breeds and their unique musical characteristics.
-
Compose a Dog Symphony: Using the information gathered in the previous activity, ask the student to imagine a symphony composed specifically for dogs. Have them create a musical composition using their preferred method (notation, humming, or playing an instrument if available). Encourage them to incorporate the musical characteristics of the dog breeds they researched.
-
Perform and Share: Once the composition is complete, have the student perform their Dog Symphony for you or other family members. If instruments are not available, they can sing or use everyday objects as percussion instruments to represent different dog sounds.
Fourth Grade Talking Points
- "Did you know that some dog breeds have unique musical abilities?"
- "Different dog breeds have different sounds they make, just like different musical instruments produce different sounds."
- "Imagine if dogs had their own symphony. What kind of music would they create?"
- "By researching different dog breeds and their musical characteristics, we can create a musical composition inspired by dogs."
- "Let's perform our Dog Symphony and share it with others. It will be a unique and fun musical experience!"
