Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to understand and appreciate the cultural significance of Day of the Dead in Spanish-speaking countries, as well as learn some basic Spanish vocabulary related to the celebration.

Materials and Prep

  • Whiteboard or paper
  • Markers or colored pencils
  • Printed pictures or illustrations related to Day of the Dead
  • Access to online resources or books about Day of the Dead

Activities

  1. Introduction to Day of the Dead

    Begin by showing the student pictures or illustrations related to Day of the Dead. Explain that Day of the Dead is a holiday celebrated in Spanish-speaking countries to honor and remember loved ones who have passed away. Discuss the colorful decorations, such as sugar skulls and marigold flowers, that are used during the celebration.

  2. Spanish Vocabulary Practice

    Teach the student some basic Spanish vocabulary related to Day of the Dead. Write the following words on the whiteboard or paper:

    • Calavera (skull)
    • Pan de muerto (bread of the dead)
    • Cempasúchil (marigold)
    • Altar (altar)
    • Catrina (elegant skull)

    Read the words aloud and have the student repeat after you. Practice pronouncing the words together.

  3. Create a Day of the Dead Drawing

    Ask the student to draw a picture related to Day of the Dead using the Spanish vocabulary words they just learned. Encourage them to be creative and include as many details as possible. Once they finish, have them describe their drawing using the Spanish words they learned.

  4. Learn Useful Phrases in Spanish

    Introduce the student to some useful phrases in Spanish that they can use during Day of the Dead. Write the following phrases on the whiteboard or paper:

    • "¡Feliz Día de los Muertos!" (Happy Day of the Dead!)
    • "¿Cómo se llama?" (What is your name?)
    • "Gracias" (Thank you)
    • "Por favor" (Please)

    Practice pronouncing the phrases together and encourage the student to use them in context throughout the lesson.
