Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to design and create their own skateboard deck using practical arts skills.

Materials and Prep

  • Blank skateboard deck
  • Markers or paint
  • Clear sealant or varnish
  • Paintbrushes
  • Reference materials (skateboard designs, images, or patterns)

Before starting the lesson, the student should have a basic understanding of skateboarding and its components.

Activities

  1. Introduction to Skateboard Design
  2. Discuss the importance of skateboard design and how it reflects the personality and style of the skateboarder. Show examples of different skateboard designs and discuss what makes them unique.

  3. Brainstorming and Sketching
  4. Encourage the student to brainstorm their own skateboard design ideas. Provide them with reference materials and guide them in sketching their design on paper.

  5. Transferring the Design
  6. Using the markers or paint, help the student transfer their design onto the blank skateboard deck. They can outline the design first and then fill it in with colors and details.

  7. Finishing Touches
  8. Once the design is complete, instruct the student to apply a clear sealant or varnish to protect the artwork and give it a glossy finish. Allow it to dry completely.

  9. Show and Tell
  10. Have the student showcase their finished skateboard deck to family members or friends. Encourage them to explain the inspiration behind their design and the techniques they used to create it.
