By the end of this lesson, you will be able to practice basic arithmetic skills using Legos.

Materials and Prep

  • Legos (various sizes and colors)
  • Number flashcards (0-10)
  • Counting chart (0-20)
  • Pencil and paper

Before starting the lesson, make sure you are familiar with basic addition and subtraction concepts.

Activities

  1. Counting with Legos:

Use the counting chart and Legos to practice counting from 0 to 20. Place the corresponding number of Legos on each number on the chart.

  2. Building Addition Towers:

Choose two number flashcards and build two towers with the corresponding number of Legos. Then, combine the towers and count the total number of Legos.

  3. Subtraction Challenge:

Build a tower with a certain number of Legos. Remove some Legos and ask your student to count how many are left. Repeat with different numbers.

First Grade Talking Points

  • "Math is all around us, even in our favorite toys like Legos!"
  • "Counting is important because it helps us keep track of how many things we have."
  • "When we add Legos together, we are finding the total number of Legos."
  • "Subtraction is when we take away some Legos from a group and see how many are left."
  • "Let's use Legos to practice our addition and subtraction skills!"
