Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand the concept of history and how it relates to different time periods.

Materials and Prep

  • Legos
  • Timer or stopwatch

No prior knowledge is required for this lesson. Just come with an open mind and your enthusiasm for Legos!

Activities

  1. Build a Lego structure together. Set a timer for a specific time limit, for example, 5 minutes.

Discuss how the structure you built is like a snapshot in time. Explain that just like Legos can be used to create different things, history is made up of different periods of time.

  2. Take apart the Lego structure and build a different one. Set the timer again, but this time give yourself a longer time limit, for example, 15 minutes.

Explain that just like you can change what you build with Legos, history also changes over time. People and events can shape how history unfolds.

  3. Ask the student to build a Lego structure on their own, without a time limit.

Encourage the student to think about what they want to create and how it reflects their own ideas and imagination. Relate this to how individuals can contribute to history in their own unique ways.

Kindergarten Grade Talking Points

  • "History is like looking at old pictures or videos. It shows us what happened a long time ago."
  • "Just like Legos can be used to build different things, history is made up of different time periods."
  • "Sometimes, people and events can change how history unfolds, just like how we can change what we build with Legos."
  • "Everyone can contribute to history in their own special way, just like how you can create your own unique Lego structures."
