Materials and Prep

  • Puzzle books or puzzles with large, colorful pieces
  • Picture books with simple sentences
  • Writing materials (crayons, markers, etc.)
  • Blank paper

Activities

  • 1. Puzzle Fun: Start by introducing the toddler to a puzzle book or a puzzle with large, colorful pieces. Guide them to solve the puzzle by identifying shapes, colors, and patterns. Encourage them to describe what they see as they complete the puzzle.
  • 2. Picture Book Reading: Select a picture book with simple sentences and engaging illustrations. Read the book aloud to the toddler, pointing to the pictures and asking questions about what they see. Encourage them to make predictions about the story based on the pictures.
  • 3. Draw and Tell: Provide the toddler with blank paper and writing materials. Ask them to draw a picture of their favorite character or scene from the picture book. After they finish drawing, have them describe their drawing and tell a story about it. Write down their words or help them write if they are able.

Toddler Grade Talking Points

  • "Puzzles help us use our thinking skills. We look at the shapes and colors to put the pieces together."
  • "When we read picture books, we can use our imagination to think about what might happen next in the story."
  • "Drawing pictures helps us tell stories. We can use our words to describe what we drew and make up a fun story about it."
