Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand some basic concepts in chemistry and have fun exploring chemical reactions.
Materials and Prep
- Water
- Baking soda
- Vinegar
- Food coloring (optional)
- Empty plastic bottles or cups
- Measuring spoons
- Small containers for mixing
- Protective apron or old clothes
Before starting the lesson, make sure to explain to your child that they will be working with safe household materials and that adult supervision is required.
Activities
- Mixing Colors: Fill separate containers with water and add a few drops of food coloring to each. Let your child experiment by mixing different colors together. Encourage them to describe what happens when different colors are mixed.
- Baking Soda and Vinegar: Fill a plastic bottle or cup halfway with vinegar. In a separate container, mix baking soda with a small amount of water to make a paste. Show your child how to pour the baking soda paste into the vinegar and observe the reaction. Discuss what they see, such as the fizzing and bubbling.
- Volcano Eruption: Create a volcano by building a mound of dirt or play dough on a tray or in a container. Make a small hole at the top of the mound. Mix baking soda with a small amount of water to make a paste and fill the hole with the paste. Pour vinegar into the hole and watch the eruption! Discuss how the baking soda and vinegar react to create the eruption.
Preschool Grade Talking Points
- "Chemistry is a branch of science that helps us understand how different substances can react with each other."
- "When we mix different colors together, they can create new colors. For example, when we mix red and blue, we get purple!"
- "Baking soda and vinegar are two common household items that react with each other. When we mix them together, they create a fizzing and bubbling reaction."
- "The volcano eruption is a fun experiment that shows us how the baking soda and vinegar react to create a big eruption, just like a real volcano!"
