Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand and practice basic arithmetic concepts through fun activities related to Blippi.
Materials and Prep
- Blippi videos or books
- Counting objects (e.g., toys, blocks)
- Pen and paper
Activities
-
Watch a Blippi video or read a Blippi book together.
Discuss the numbers and counting mentioned in the video or book. Encourage your child to count along with Blippi.
-
Using the counting objects, ask your child to count a specific number of objects. For example, "Can you count 5 blocks for me?"
Repeat this activity with different numbers to reinforce counting skills.
-
Introduce addition and subtraction using the objects. For addition, ask your child to add two groups of objects together. For example, "If we have 2 blocks here and 3 blocks there, how many blocks do we have in total?"
For subtraction, ask your child to remove a certain number of objects from a group. For example, "If we have 5 blocks and we take away 2 blocks, how many blocks are left?"
-
Play a game of "I Spy" using numbers. Say, "I spy with my little eye something that has 4 sides." Encourage your child to guess the number.
Take turns being the one who spies a number.
Preschool Grade Talking Points
- "Numbers help us count things. We can count how many toys we have or how many friends we see."
- "We can add numbers together. If we have 2 blocks and we add 3 more blocks, we have 5 blocks in total."
- "We can also take away numbers. If we have 5 blocks and we take away 2 blocks, we have 3 blocks left."
- "Let's play a game! I spy with my little eye something that has 4 sides. Can you guess what number I'm thinking of?"
