Materials and Prep

  • Sketchbook or plain white paper
  • Pencils and erasers
  • Colored pencils or markers
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Construction paper or cardstock in various colors
  • Reference materials such as books or online resources about flowers

No prior knowledge or experience is required for this lesson.

Activities

  1. Activity 1: Flower Sketching

Begin by observing different types of flowers through reference materials or by going outside to explore your surroundings. Choose one flower that captures your interest and sketch it in your sketchbook or on a piece of paper. Pay attention to the details of the flower, such as its shape, petals, and any unique characteristics. Use your pencils to add shading and create depth in your sketch.

  2. Activity 2: Flower Collage

Using construction paper or cardstock, cut out various shapes and colors to represent different flower parts such as petals, stems, and leaves. Arrange and glue these pieces together to create a unique flower collage. Get creative with your color combinations and patterns!

  3. Activity 3: Floral Patterns

Create your own floral patterns by using colored pencils or markers. Start with a plain sheet of paper and repeat a simple flower shape or motif in different sizes and orientations. Experiment with different color combinations and fill your paper with a vibrant and visually appealing floral pattern.

Seventh Grade Talking Points

  • Flowers have been a subject of inspiration for artists throughout history. Vincent van Gogh once said, "If you truly love nature, you will find beauty everywhere."

  • Artists often use different techniques to capture the beauty of flowers, such as sketching, collage, and pattern-making.

  • Sketching allows artists to observe and study the details of a flower, helping them understand its form and structure.

  • Collage is a technique where different materials are combined to create an artwork. By using construction paper or cardstock, we can create flower collages with different colors and textures.

  • Patterns can be found in nature, including the intricate designs of flowers. By creating our own floral patterns, we can explore repetition, symmetry, and color combinations.
