Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to create a nature-inspired Lego graphic novel artwork while learning about the history of art.

Materials and Prep

  • Lego bricks
  • Paper or sketchbook
  • Pencils or markers
  • Reference books or online resources about nature and graphic novels

Before starting the lesson, familiarize yourself with different types of Lego bricks and techniques for building with them. Also, gather information about nature and graphic novels to share with the student.

Activities

  1. Introduction to Nature and Graphic Novels (10 minutes)
    Discuss with the student what they know about nature and graphic novels. Show them examples of nature-themed graphic novels and explain how they can combine their interests in nature, Lego, and graphic novels in their artwork.
  2. Research and Planning (15 minutes)
    Guide the student to research different aspects of nature and select a specific theme for their artwork. Help them sketch out a basic storyline or concept for their graphic novel.
  3. Lego Building (30 minutes)
    Provide the student with Lego bricks and encourage them to build scenes and characters related to their chosen nature theme. Remind them to consider the visual storytelling elements of a graphic novel, such as setting, characters, and action.
  4. Graphic Novel Illustration (20 minutes)
    Using the sketches they made earlier, assist the student in creating illustrations for their graphic novel. Encourage them to use colors and details to bring their story to life.
  5. Reflection and Sharing (10 minutes)
    Have the student reflect on their artwork and share their graphic novel with you or other family members. Discuss their choices and the connections they made between nature, Lego, and graphic novels.
