Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to apply geometry concepts to gardening, such as identifying and classifying shapes, measuring garden plots, and understanding symmetry in plants.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and pencil
  • Ruler or measuring tape
  • Access to a garden or outdoor space

No prior knowledge or preparation is required for this lesson.

Activities

  1. Shape Hunt: Go outside to your garden or outdoor space and look for different shapes in the plants and objects around you. Draw and label the shapes you find, such as circles, squares, triangles, and rectangles.

  2. Garden Plot Measurement: Choose a section of your garden or outdoor space to measure. Use a ruler or measuring tape to measure the length and width of the plot. Calculate the area of the plot by multiplying the length and width. Discuss how knowing the area can help you plan and plant your garden effectively.

  3. Symmetry in Plants: Find different plants or flowers in your garden and observe their symmetry. Discuss what symmetry means and how it can be seen in nature. Draw and label the symmetrical parts of the plants.

Third Grade Talking Points

  • "Geometry is a branch of mathematics that deals with shapes, sizes, and properties of figures."
  • "In gardening, we can use geometry to identify and classify shapes we see in plants and objects."
  • "Shapes like circles, squares, triangles, and rectangles can be found in plants and objects in our garden."
  • "By measuring the length and width of our garden plot, we can calculate its area, which helps us plan and plant our garden effectively."
  • "Symmetry means that an object or shape can be divided into two equal parts that are mirror images of each other."
  • "In nature, many plants exhibit symmetry, where one side of the plant is a mirror image of the other."
  • "We can observe and draw the symmetrical parts of plants to better understand their symmetry."
