Introduction (5 minutes):

Start with excitement! Make a siren sound ("Wooooo, woooo!"). Ask the child, "What makes that sound?" Talk briefly about fire trucks and how they help people. Show them the letter 'F' (uppercase and lowercase) and say, "'F' is for Fire Truck! What sound does 'F' make? /f/ /f/ /f/." Practice making the sound together.

Reading Aloud (10 minutes):

Read an age-appropriate picture book about fire trucks. As you read, point to pictures, emphasize new words (like 'siren', 'ladder', 'hose', 'red'), and occasionally point out the letter 'F' if it appears in large print or titles. Encourage the child to make the siren sound when the book mentions it.

Activities (15 minutes):

  • Letter F Fun: Provide large cut-outs or magnetic letters of 'F' and 'f'. Let the child trace the shape with their finger. Say the sound /f/ each time they trace it. Ask them to find other things that start with 'F' (if applicable, like 'finger', 'foot', 'fish').
  • Fire Truck Craft: Use pre-cut construction paper shapes (a large red rectangle for the body, smaller black circles for wheels, a white rectangle for a ladder) and glue sticks. Help the child assemble their own simple fire truck on a piece of paper. While crafting, talk about the parts: "Here's the red body. Let's add the black wheels. Where does the ladder go?" You can write "Ff" or "Fire Truck" on their picture.

Comprehension & Wrap-up (5 minutes):

Ask simple questions about the story: "What color was the fire truck in our book?" "What sound does a fire truck make?" "What does a fire truck have (ladder, hose)?" Finish by singing a simple fire truck song or chant (e.g., "Hurry, hurry, drive the fire truck!" tune of 'Row Your Boat') or just making the /f/ sound and the siren sound one more time. Praise their great listening and participation!
