Opening (5 minutes):
"Hi Super Helper! Do you know how superheroes often work in teams, like the Avengers or the Paw Patrol, to save the world? Working together makes them stronger! Today, we're going to read a story about someone who needed help, and we'll see if working together happened. It's about a little red hen!" Show the book cover. "Let's see what adventure she has."
Activity 1: Story Time (10-15 minutes):
Read 'The Little Red Hen' aloud with enthusiasm. Use different voices for the characters. Pause frequently:
- Point to the pictures: "Who is this? What is the hen trying to do now?"
- Ask predictive questions: "Hmm, the hen needs help planting the wheat. Do you think the cat will help? Let's see!"
- Emphasize the repeated phrase: "'Not I!' said the cat. 'Not I!' said the dog..." Encourage the student to join in.
- Point out simple words or the first letter of the student's name if it appears.
Activity 2: Story Retell & Teamwork Talk (10 minutes):
Use the character pictures/figures. "Let's remember our story! Who was the main character who wanted to make bread?" (Hen) "Who did she ask for help?" (Cat, Dog, Mouse) "Did they help her plant the seeds? Make the flour? Bake the bread?" (No) "How do you think the Little Red Hen felt when nobody helped?" (Sad, tired, frustrated). "What happened at the end when the bread was ready? Did the others want to help eat it?" (Yes) "Did the hen share? Why or why not?" (Discuss based on the story version). "What could the cat, dog, and mouse have done differently? How would the story change if they ALL worked together like a superhero team?" (It would be faster, easier, more fun, and maybe everyone could share!).
Activity 3: Be a Helper! (5-10 minutes):
"Working together is like being on a team! Just like superheroes team up to save the world, we can team up to help each other." On the large paper, draw a simple picture of people working together (e.g., stick figures cleaning up toys). "How can you be a super helper at home or outside?" (Ideas: help tidy up, help set the table, help water a plant, share toys). Write down or draw simple pictures of their ideas. "When we help each other, we make things better for everyone! That's a way we help 'save the world' by making it a nicer place."
Optional Activity: Make & Share (10-15 minutes):
"Let's pretend to make something together, but WE will help each other!" Make simple salt dough (2 parts flour, 1 part salt, approx. 1 part water) or follow a simple bread/biscuit recipe if time and resources allow. Emphasize taking turns, helping pour, mix, etc. "See how much easier and fun it is when we work together, unlike the animals in the story?"
Closing (3-5 minutes):
"You were a fantastic reading superhero today! We read about the Little Red Hen and learned that working together is super important, just like superhero teams! Can you tell me one way you can be a helper this week?" Praise their participation and ideas. Optional: Award a 'Super Helper' sticker or badge. "Great job working together on our lesson!"
