Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to apply arithmetic concepts to solve problems related to stars.

Materials and Prep

  • Pencil and paper
  • Calculator (optional)
  • Prior knowledge of basic arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division)

Activities

  1. Activity 1: Star Counting

Step 1: Go outside on a clear night and observe the stars.

Step 2: Count the number of stars visible in a specific area of the sky.

Step 3: Write down the number of stars you counted.

Step 4: Repeat the process in different areas of the sky and record the number of stars each time.

Step 5: Calculate the average number of stars you counted per area by adding up the total number of stars and dividing it by the number of areas.

  2. Activity 2: Star Patterns

Step 1: Research different star patterns such as constellations.

Step 2: Choose one star pattern and draw it on a piece of paper.

Step 3: Count the number of stars in the pattern and write it down.

Step 4: Use arithmetic operations to create number sentences related to the star pattern. For example, add the number of stars in the pattern to the number of stars counted in Activity 1.

Seventh Grade Talking Points

  • "Arithmetic is an important branch of mathematics that deals with numbers and their operations."
  • "In Activity 1, we counted the number of stars to collect data and calculate the average. This is an example of using arithmetic to analyze and interpret information."
  • "In Activity 2, we explored star patterns and used arithmetic to create number sentences. This helps us make connections between different mathematical concepts."
  • "Arithmetic can be applied to various real-life situations, including studying stars and celestial objects."
  • "By practicing arithmetic skills, we can improve our problem-solving abilities and better understand the world around us."
