Lesson Activities

Introduction (5 mins)

¡Hola! Today we are going on an adventure inside a house, or 'una casa'. We will learn the Spanish names for different rooms, 'los cuartos'. Have you ever thought about what we call the kitchen or your bedroom in Spanish?

Vocabulary Introduction (10 mins)

Let's look at these pictures. This is the living room, in Spanish, we say 'la sala'. Can you repeat? 'La sala'.

(Show picture flashcard and word flashcard for each room, practicing pronunciation):

  • Living room: la sala
  • Kitchen: la cocina
  • Bathroom: el baño
  • Bedroom: el dormitorio
  • Dining room: el comedor
  • Garden/Yard: el jardín

Let's say them all together one more time! ¡Fantástico!

Activity 1: Matching Game (10 mins)

Okay, time for a game! I'm going to mix up the picture cards and the word cards. Can you match the Spanish word to the correct picture?

(Lay out picture cards. Hand the student a word card and have them place it on the matching picture, or lay out all cards face down for a memory match game.)

Activity 2: ¡Dibuja Tu Cuarto Favorito! (Draw Your Favorite Room!) (10 mins)

Now, take your paper and crayons. Think about your favorite room in your house. Draw it! When you're done, try to label it with its Spanish name. Is it 'el dormitorio'? 'La sala'? 'La cocina'?

(Allow time for drawing and labeling. Offer help with spelling if needed.)

Activity 3: ¿Dónde Estás? (Where Are You?) (5 mins)

Imagine you are in one of the rooms we learned. I will ask '¿Dónde estás?' (Where are you?). You can answer 'Estoy en...' (I am in...) and then say the Spanish name of the room. Let's practice!

  • Teacher: '¿Dónde estás?'
  • Student: 'Estoy en la cocina.' (pretending to be in the kitchen)
  • Teacher: '¡Muy bien!' (Switch roles if desired)

Wrap-up & Review (5 mins)

¡Excelente trabajo hoy! You learned so many new words for the rooms in 'una casa'. Can you tell me the name of this room? (Show a flashcard, e.g., 'el baño'). And this one? (Show 'la sala').

(Optional: Sing a simple song about the rooms of the house together.)

¡Adiós!
