Objective

By the end of this lesson, the first-grade student will be able to read and comprehend simple texts about horses.

Materials and Prep

  • Books or short stories about horses
  • Paper and pencils

Activities

  1. Introduce the topic of horses to the student. Show them pictures or videos of horses to generate interest and excitement.

  2. Choose a short story or book about horses that is appropriate for the student's reading level. Read the story aloud to the student, emphasizing the words and phrases related to horses.

  3. After reading, ask the student comprehension questions about the story. For example, "What was the main character's name?" or "What did the horse eat?" Encourage the student to answer in complete sentences.

  4. Give the student a piece of paper and ask them to draw a picture of their favorite part of the story. Then, ask them to write a sentence or two describing their drawing. Provide guidance and support as needed.

  5. Have the student share their drawing and description with you. Ask them to read their sentence(s) aloud and discuss why they chose that particular scene.
