Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to apply arithmetic skills to solve football-related math problems.
Materials and Prep
- Paper
- Pencil
No prior knowledge or materials are required for this lesson.
Activities
-
Football Field Measurements:
Draw a football field on a piece of paper, labeling the end zones, yard lines, and goal posts. Measure and calculate the length and width of the field in feet and yards. Discuss the conversion between feet and yards.
-
Scoring Combinations:
Ask the student to come up with different scoring combinations in football, such as touchdowns (6 points), field goals (3 points), and extra point conversions (1 or 2 points). Have them calculate the total score for each combination.
-
Player Statistics:
Choose a football player and research their statistics, such as rushing yards, passing yards, and touchdowns. Create word problems using these statistics and ask the student to solve them using arithmetic.
Fifth Grade Talking Points
- "Did you know that a football field is 100 yards long and 53.3 yards wide? That's equivalent to 300 feet by 160 feet!"
- "Scoring in football can be quite interesting. For example, a touchdown is worth 6 points, a field goal is worth 3 points, and an extra point conversion can be worth 1 or 2 points."
- "Let's say a football player rushed for 120 yards, passed for 200 yards, and scored 2 touchdowns in a game. How many total yards did the player gain and how many points did they contribute to their team's score?"
