Objective

Before starting the lesson, the student should have a basic understanding of reading comprehension strategies such as identifying main characters, setting, and plot.

Activities

  1. Introduce the chosen fictional book to the student, providing a brief summary and discussing the cover art or illustrations.
  2. Ask the student to make predictions about the story based on the title, cover, and any prior knowledge they may have.
  3. Read the first chapter or a selected passage from the book aloud to the student, modeling proper reading fluency and expression.
  4. Encourage the student to take notes while listening to the reading, jotting down any important details, characters, or settings they encounter.
  5. After reading, engage in a discussion with the student about what they noted and their initial thoughts on the story.
  6. Guide the student in identifying the main characters, setting, and plot of the story, asking questions to prompt their thinking and analysis.
  7. Have the student practice summarizing the chapter or passage in their own words, focusing on the main events and key details.
  8. Assign the student to read the next chapter or passage independently and repeat the note-taking and summarization process.
  9. Encourage the student to continue reading the book independently, practicing their comprehension skills and making connections between the chapters.
  10. Conclude the lesson by discussing the student's overall impressions of the book and their progress in analyzing and comprehending the text.
