Objective
By the end of this lesson, the homeschool student will be able to apply arithmetic concepts to solve problems related to roller hockey.
Materials and Prep
- Paper and pencil
- Calculator (optional)
- Basic knowledge of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division
Activities
-
Activity: Calculating Team Scores
Have the student imagine a roller hockey game where two teams are competing. Provide them with a hypothetical scenario, such as Team A scoring 3 goals and Team B scoring 2 goals. Ask the student to calculate the total number of goals scored by both teams.
-
Activity: Finding Average Goals
Using the same scenario as before, instruct the student to find the average number of goals scored per team. Guide them to add the number of goals scored by both teams and then divide by the total number of teams (2 in this case).
-
Activity: Time on Skates
Ask the student to imagine they are playing roller hockey and track their time on skates for a week. Instruct them to record the time they spend on skates each day and then calculate the total time spent for the week.
Fifth Grade Talking Points
- "Arithmetic is the branch of mathematics that deals with numbers and operations."
- "In roller hockey, we can use arithmetic to solve problems related to scoring, averages, and time."
- "To calculate the total number of goals scored by two teams, we add the number of goals each team scored."
- "To find the average number of goals per team, we add the number of goals scored by both teams and then divide by the total number of teams."
- "When tracking time on skates, we record the time spent each day and then calculate the total time spent for the week by adding all the recorded times."
