Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to apply arithmetic skills to solve math problems related to Ark survival.
Materials and Prep
- Pen or pencil
- Blank paper
- Calculator (optional)
- Basic knowledge of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division
Activities
-
Activity 1: Resource Gathering
Imagine you are playing Ark survival and you need to gather resources to build your base. Create a list of 5 different resources you would need and assign each resource a value in terms of how many you need. For example, wood = 10, stone = 5, etc. Add up the values to find the total number of resources needed.
-
Activity 2: Taming Dinosaurs
In Ark survival, you can tame dinosaurs to help you in your adventures. Choose 3 different dinosaurs and their respective taming times. Add up the taming times to find the total time it would take to tame all 3 dinosaurs.
-
Activity 3: Crafting Items
Think about the items you would need to craft in Ark survival. Choose 2 different items and their crafting costs in terms of resources. Multiply the number of resources needed by the number of items to find the total number of resources required for crafting.
Third Grade Talking Points
- "In Ark survival, we can use math to help us make decisions and solve problems."
- "Addition is when we combine two or more numbers to find the total."
- "Subtraction is when we take away a number from another number."
- "Multiplication is when we add a number to itself several times."
- "Division is when we share or divide a number into equal parts."
- "In Activity 1, we practiced addition by adding up the values of different resources."
- "In Activity 2, we used addition to find the total taming time for multiple dinosaurs."
- "In Activity 3, we used multiplication to calculate the total number of resources needed for crafting."
