Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to perform arithmetic operations involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
Materials and Prep
- Pencil
- Blank paper
- Calculator (optional)
Before starting the lesson, make sure you have a basic understanding of numbers and basic arithmetic operations.
Activities
-
Activity 1: Addition and Subtraction Challenge
Write down 10 addition and subtraction problems on a piece of paper. Set a timer for 5 minutes and try to solve as many problems as you can within the given time. If you need help, you can use a calculator.
-
Activity 2: Multiplication and Division Race
Grab a partner, it can be your infant sister, and compete in a multiplication and division race. Each person takes turns solving multiplication and division problems. The first one to correctly solve 10 problems wins the race!
-
Activity 3: Real-life Math Problems
Look around your home and find five real-life math problems. For example, you can calculate how many toys are in a box, how much money you have in your piggy bank, or how many slices of pizza are left. Write down the problems and solve them using the appropriate arithmetic operations.
Fifth Grade Talking Points
- "Arithmetic is the branch of mathematics that deals with numbers and the basic operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division."
- "Addition is when you combine two or more numbers to find the total or sum."
- "Subtraction is when you take away one number from another to find the difference."
- "Multiplication is a shortcut for repeated addition. It helps us find the total when we have equal groups of numbers."
- "Division is the opposite of multiplication. It helps us split a number into equal groups or find out how many times one number can be divided by another."
- "Arithmetic is used in everyday life, such as when we go shopping, cook, or play games that involve keeping score."
