Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to apply arithmetic concepts in a fun and engaging way using Minecraft.

Materials and Prep

  • A computer or tablet with Minecraft installed
  • Paper and pencil
  • Basic knowledge of Minecraft controls

Activities

  1. Activity 1: Counting Blocks

Go into Minecraft and choose a building or structure you want to create. Start by counting the number of blocks you will need for each section of the structure. Write down the counts for each section on your paper. Add up the total number of blocks needed for the entire structure.

  2. Activity 2: Addition and Subtraction

Once you have the total number of blocks needed, think about how many blocks you already have in your inventory. Subtract the number of blocks you have from the total number needed to find out how many more blocks you need to collect. Write down this subtraction equation on your paper and solve it.

  3. Activity 3: Multiplication

Next, consider how many blocks you can collect in one Minecraft day. Multiply the number of blocks you can collect in a day by the number of days you have until you want to complete the structure. Write down this multiplication equation on your paper and solve it to find out how many blocks you can collect in the given timeframe.

  4. Activity 4: Division

Now, divide the remaining number of blocks needed by the number of blocks you can collect in a day. Write down this division equation on your paper and solve it to determine how many days it will take for you to collect enough blocks to complete the structure.

Fourth Grade Talking Points

  • "In Minecraft, we can use arithmetic to plan and build structures."
  • "Counting blocks helps us keep track of how many we need for different parts of a structure."
  • "By subtracting the blocks we already have from the total number needed, we can figure out how many more blocks we need to collect."
  • "Multiplication helps us determine how many blocks we can collect in a given timeframe based on our collection rate."
  • "Division allows us to calculate how many days it will take to collect enough blocks to complete a structure."
