Objective
By the end of this lesson, the Kindergarten student will be able to understand and apply basic arithmetic concepts through fun activities related to The Hobbit.
Materials and Prep
- Paper and pencil
- Printed arithmetic worksheets (addition and subtraction)
- The Hobbit book or movie (optional)
Prior knowledge: Basic counting skills
Activities
- Counting with Bilbo: Read a chapter from The Hobbit and have the student count the number of times a specific word or object appears. For example, count the number of times the word "dragon" is mentioned. Write down the count on paper.
- Arithmetic with Dwarves: Use printed arithmetic worksheets with addition and subtraction problems. Replace the numbers in the problems with names of dwarf characters from The Hobbit. For example, instead of "3 + 2 =", write "Balin + Dwalin =". Have the student solve the problems and write the answers on the paper.
- Treasure Hunt: Hide small objects around the house or yard and create arithmetic challenges to find them. For example, write a clue that says "Find the treasure by solving the addition problem: 2 + 3." The student needs to solve the problem and then search for the hidden object.
