Peppa Pig's Muddy Puddle Spelling!

Materials Needed:

  • Letter cards or magnetic letters (P, I, G, M, U, D)
  • Pictures or small figures of Peppa Pig, Mummy Pig, Daddy Pig, a muddy puddle
  • A shallow tray
  • Substance for 'mud' (e.g., chocolate pudding, brown paint in a sealed bag, sand, or salt)
  • Paper and crayons/markers
  • Optional: Peppa Pig storybook

Lesson Activities:

Warm-up: Peppa Time! (5 minutes)

Start by talking about Peppa Pig! Ask your student: "Who is your favorite character? What does Peppa Pig love to jump in? (Muddy Puddles!)" Sing a short Peppa Pig song or make pig snorting sounds together.

Activity 1: Meet the Letters (10 minutes)

Introduce the letters for the day using the Peppa Pig theme:

  • P: Show the letter 'P'. "P is for Peppa! P is for Pig! What sound does P make? /p/ /p/ /p/." Have the student practice the sound.
  • M: Show the letter 'M'. "M is for Mummy Pig! M is for Muddy! What sound does M make? /m/ /m/ /m/." Practice the sound.
  • D: Show the letter 'D'. "D is for Daddy Pig! What sound does D make? /d/ /d/ /d/." Practice the sound.
  • Briefly introduce I (/i/), G (/g/), and U (/u/) sounds.

Show pictures/figures of Peppa, Mummy, and Daddy Pig. Have the student match the beginning letter (P, M, D) to the correct character.

Activity 2: Muddy Puddle Word Building (15 minutes)

"Let's help Peppa make words in the muddy puddles!"

  1. Spell PIG: Say the word "pig" slowly, emphasizing each sound: /p/ /i/ /g/. Place the letter cards P, I, G out. Guide the student to find the letters and place them in order to spell P-I-G. Cheer! "We spelled PIG, just like Peppa Pig!"
  2. Spell MUD: Show the picture of the muddy puddle. Say the word "mud" slowly: /m/ /u/ /d/. Place the letter cards M, U, D out (remove I, G temporarily if needed to avoid confusion). Guide the student to find the letters and spell M-U-D. Cheer! "We spelled MUD, like muddy puddles!"
  3. Mud Writing: Spread the 'mud' (pudding, paint bag, sand) in the tray. Help the student use their finger to trace the letters P, I, G, M, U, D in the 'mud'. They can also try writing the words 'pig' and 'mud'.

Wrap-up & Assessment (5-10 minutes)

  • Ask the student to point to the letter that makes the /p/ sound (for Peppa/Pig), the /m/ sound (for Mummy/Mud), etc.
  • Give the student paper and crayons. Ask them to draw Peppa Pig jumping in a muddy puddle and try to write the letter 'P' or 'M' nearby.
  • Optional: Read a short Peppa Pig book together, pointing out any focus letters or words you see.

Differentiation:

  • Support: Focus only on identifying the initial sounds/letters (P, M, D) and matching them to characters. Provide hand-over-hand assistance with tracing.
  • Challenge: Introduce George's 'Dinosaur' (letter D) or Suzy Sheep's 'S'. Try spelling other simple words like 'up' or 'dig'.
