Objective

By the end of this lesson, the toddler will be able to engage in language arts and reading activities related to art, fostering creativity and language development.

Materials and Prep

  • Art supplies: crayons, markers, colored pencils, construction paper
  • Picture books about art
  • Printed coloring pages or drawing prompts
  • Art smock or old shirt to protect clothing

Activities

  1. Read Aloud: Start the lesson by reading a picture book about art, such as "The Dot" by Peter H. Reynolds. Encourage the toddler to interact with the story by pointing to the illustrations and asking simple questions about colors and shapes.
  2. Art Exploration: Provide the toddler with art supplies and coloring pages or drawing prompts. Let them freely express their creativity through drawing and coloring. Encourage them to talk about their artwork, asking questions like, "What did you draw?" or "Tell me about the colors you used."
  3. Art Appreciation: Show the toddler different artworks, either through books or online resources. Discuss the colors, shapes, and emotions depicted in the artworks. Ask open-ended questions like, "How does this artwork make you feel?" or "What do you think is happening in this picture?"
  4. Storytelling: Encourage the toddler to create their own story based on their artwork. Ask them to describe what is happening in their drawing and help them turn it into a simple narrative. Write down or record their story to share and revisit later.
