Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to write a creative story about football using descriptive language and proper sentence structure.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper
  • Pencil

No prior knowledge or preparation is required for this lesson.

Activities

  1. Warm-up: Start by brainstorming football-related words together. Write down as many words as you can think of that are related to football. For example, helmet, touchdown, quarterback, etc.

  2. Story Creation: Using the words you brainstormed, create a story about a football game. Start with an introduction, describe the setting, characters, and the problem or conflict. Then, describe the events of the game and how it is resolved. Try to use as many descriptive words as possible to make your story more interesting.

  3. Editing and Revising: Read your story aloud and make any necessary changes. Check for proper sentence structure, spelling, and punctuation. You can also ask a parent or guardian to help you with this step.

  4. Final Draft: Rewrite your story neatly on a fresh sheet of paper. Pay attention to your handwriting and make sure your story is organized and easy to read.

  5. Sharing Time: Share your story with a family member or a friend. You can even act out some parts of your story to make it more engaging!

Second Grade Talking Points

  • "What is a story? A story is a way to share our imagination and ideas with others. It has a beginning, middle, and end."
  • "Why is it important to use descriptive words in our writing? Descriptive words help paint a picture in the reader's mind and make our writing more interesting. For example, instead of saying 'the football game was fun,' we can say 'the thrilling football game was filled with cheers and excitement.'
  • "What does it mean to edit and revise our writing? Editing and revising means going back and making improvements to our writing. We check for mistakes in spelling, grammar, and punctuation, and make changes to make our writing clearer and more polished."
  • "Why is it important to share our writing with others? Sharing our writing allows us to express ourselves and receive feedback from others. It also helps us become better writers by learning from different perspectives and ideas."
