Introduction (5 minutes)
"Have you ever imagined having your own pair of sparkling fairy wings? What if they shimmered with all the colors of the rainbow? Today, we get to be magical craft-makers and create our very own wearable Rainbow Fairy Wings! Can you name the colors in a rainbow?" (Briefly discuss rainbow colors: Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo/Purple). Show a picture of a rainbow or rainbow fairy for inspiration.
Designing the Wings (10 minutes)
1. Lay out the large piece of cardboard or poster board.
2. Together, lightly sketch a wing shape that the student likes. Think about butterfly or classic fairy shapes. Ensure it's a good size for the student's back.
3. Carefully cut out the wing shape. Adult assistance is likely needed, especially with thick cardboard.
Painting the Rainbow (20-30 minutes)
1. Prepare the painting area: cover the surface, get paints (Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Purple), brushes, water cup, and paper towels.
2. Guide the student to paint their wings with rainbow colors. They can make stripes, sections, or blend them. Encourage going in rainbow order!
3. Set the wings aside to dry completely. This is a good time for a short break or snack.
Magical Decorations (15-20 minutes)
1. Once the paint is fully dry, bring out the decorating supplies (glitter, sequins, ribbons, tissue paper, etc.) and white craft glue.
2. Let the student unleash their creativity! They can add glitter glue lines, stick on sequins, glue ribbon streamers to the bottom, or add colorful tissue paper touches.
3. Let the decorations and glue dry completely.
Adding Wearable Straps (5-10 minutes - Adult Task)
1. Determine the best placement for straps so the wings can be worn like a backpack (usually two holes vertically aligned near the center 'spine' on each side).
2. Adult Step: Carefully make four holes using a hole punch or sharp pencil/tool through the cardboard at the marked spots.
3. Cut two equal lengths of elastic or wide ribbon.
4. Thread one piece through the top hole (back to front) and bottom hole (front to back) on one side. Tie the ends securely at the back. Repeat for the other side.
5. Help the student try on the wings and adjust the strap knots for a comfortable fit.
Rainbow Fairy Flight! (5 minutes)
It's time to wear the wings! Let the student flutter and dance around, showing off their beautiful creation. Take some photos of the proud Rainbow Fairy!
Clean Up Crew (5 minutes)
Work together to put away paints, brushes, glitter, and clean up the workspace.
Chat & Check (Assessment)
Look at the wings together. Ask: "Can you point to the red part? The blue part?" "What was the most fun part of making your wings?" "What was a little tricky?" Observe the student's engagement, ability to follow steps (with help), and the finished product showing effort and understanding of the rainbow colors.
