Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to make bath bombs using citric acid, baking soda, and cornstarch, and understand the chemical reactions involved.
Materials and Prep
You will need:
- Citric acid
- Baking soda
- Cornstarch
- Measuring spoons and cups
- Mixing bowl
- Small molds or ice cube trays
- Essential oils (optional for fragrance)
- Food coloring (optional for color)
- Parental supervision for handling ingredients
Activities
1. Measure out 1/2 cup of citric acid, 1 cup of baking soda, and 1/2 cup of cornstarch into the mixing bowl.
2. Add a few drops of essential oil and food coloring to the dry mixture for fragrance and color.
3. Mix the ingredients together thoroughly using a spoon or your hands.
4. Pack the mixture into the molds or ice cube trays, pressing firmly to shape the bath bombs.
5. Let the bath bombs dry and harden for at least 24 hours before using them in the bath.
Second Grade Talking Points
- When we mix citric acid, baking soda, and cornstarch together, they react and create fizziness, just like when you mix soda and a mint candy together. This fizziness makes the bath bomb fun to use in the bath!
- We can add different scents and colors to the bath bombs to make them smell nice and look pretty. It's like making our own special bath time treats!
- It's important to measure the ingredients carefully and mix them well so that the bath bombs turn out just right. This helps us learn about following instructions and using math in a fun way!
