  • Pencils or crayons
  • Access to the internet for research (if available)

No prior knowledge required. This lesson will cover all necessary information.

Activities

  • Draw and Color: Have the student draw and color a picture of a Pilgrim family and their community. Encourage them to include a house, church, and other elements of their daily life.
  • Research: If possible, guide the student to research about the Pilgrims and their journey to America. They can write a short paragraph about what they learned.
  • Discussion: Engage the student in a conversation about the importance of rules and government in their community. Relate it to the Pilgrims and their early settlement in America.

Third Grade Talking Points

  • Pilgrims were some of the first people to come to America from England. They wanted to have freedom to practice their religion. You can say, "The Pilgrims were like the first visitors to a new land. They wanted to have the freedom to go to church and pray in their own way."
  • The Pilgrims made rules to help their community and keep everyone safe. You can say, "Just like when we play games, we have rules to follow. The Pilgrims made rules to keep their community safe and happy."
  • Citizenship means being a member of a community and following its rules. You can say, "When we live in a town or city, we are citizens. We have to follow the rules to help make our community a nice place to live."
