Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to analyze and compare characters and settings in a story, and understand how they contribute to the plot.
Materials and Prep
- Minecraft or Lego characters (optional)
- Paper and pencil
- Access to a Minecraft or Lego world
- Prior knowledge of basic reading comprehension
Activities
1. Character Comparison: Choose two characters from a story or game (e.g., Minecraft characters) and write down their similarities and differences in a chart.
2. Setting Exploration: Explore a Minecraft or Lego world and describe the setting using sensory details (sight, sound, touch, etc.) as if you were a character in the world.
3. Plot Analysis: Create a story using Minecraft or Lego characters and settings, and identify the beginning, middle, and end of the plot.
Sixth Grade Talking Points
- Characters are like the players in a game. They have different abilities and personalities that make them unique. For example, in Minecraft, Steve is a brave and adventurous character who explores new places and faces challenges.
- Settings are like the worlds in Minecraft or the environments in which Lego characters live. They can be magical, dangerous, or peaceful. Just like in Minecraft, when you enter a new world, you experience different landscapes and climates.
- The plot is the story's journey, from the beginning to the end. It's like the adventures you have in Minecraft or the challenges you face when building with Legos. Each part of the plot adds excitement and keeps us engaged, just like playing your favorite game or building a new creation.
