Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to apply arithmetic concepts in a fun Minecraft-themed activity.
Materials and Prep
- Minecraft game (if available)
- Paper and pencil
Before starting this lesson, make sure you have a basic understanding of addition and subtraction.
Activities
Design a Minecraft house with different rooms. Assign a number of blocks to each room, for example, the living room has 10 blocks, the bedroom has 8 blocks, and the kitchen has 12 blocks.
Ask yourself questions like:
- "How many blocks are there in total?"
- "If I remove 3 blocks from the living room, how many will be left?"
- "If I add 5 blocks to the kitchen, how many will it have in total?"
Create a Minecraft farm with different crops. Assign a number of crops to each type, such as 6 wheat, 4 carrots, and 7 potatoes.
Think about:
- "How many crops do I have in total?"
- "If I harvest 2 wheat, how many will be left?"
- "If I plant 3 more carrots, how many will I have in total?"
Second Grade Talking Points
- "In Minecraft, we can use arithmetic to count and calculate different things in the game."
- "We can add blocks together to find the total number of blocks in a room or subtract blocks to see how many are left after removing some."
- "We can also use addition and subtraction to count crops on a farm and find out how many are left after harvesting or planting more."
- "By practicing arithmetic in Minecraft, we can become better at math while having fun playing the game!"
