Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand the concept of plate tectonics and its impact on the Earth's surface.
Materials and Prep
Materials:
- World map or globe
- Coloring pencils or markers
- Blank paper
Prep:
- Review the basics of Earth's structure and plate tectonics
- Prepare the map or globe for the activity
Activities
1. Earth's Puzzle: Use the world map or globe to identify the major tectonic plates. Color and label them on a blank paper to create a visual representation of the Earth's plates.
2. Plate Movement: Research and create a simple model or demonstration to show how tectonic plates move and interact with each other.
Eighth Grade Talking Points
- Plate Tectonics: "Plate tectonics is the theory that explains the movement of the Earth's lithosphere. It helps us understand how the Earth's surface changes over time."
- Tectonic Plates: "The Earth's outer shell is divided into several large and small pieces called tectonic plates. These plates are constantly moving and interacting with each other."
- Volcanoes and Earthquakes: "The movement of tectonic plates can cause volcanic eruptions and earthquakes. These natural events are a result of the Earth's dynamic processes."
- Continental Drift: "The theory of continental drift suggests that the Earth's continents were once connected as a single landmass called Pangaea. Over time, the movement of tectonic plates led to the separation and positioning of the continents as we see them today."
