Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to identify and describe basic geometric shapes using Legos.

Materials and Prep

  • Legos (various shapes and colors)
  • A large flat surface to build on (e.g., a table or floor)
  • No prior knowledge or preparation required

Activities

  1. Building Shapes:

Start by introducing the concept of shapes to your child. Show them different Lego pieces and discuss their shapes (e.g., square, rectangle, triangle, circle). Then, ask them to use the Legos to build different shapes. Encourage them to experiment with different combinations of Lego pieces to create various shapes.

  2. Shape Hunt:

Hide different Lego shapes around the room or outdoor area. Give your child a list of shapes to find (e.g., find a red square, find a blue triangle). Let them search for the hidden Legos and identify the shapes they find. This activity will help reinforce their understanding of shape recognition.

  3. Shape Sorting:

Provide your child with a mix of Lego pieces and ask them to sort them by shape. They can create separate piles for squares, rectangles, triangles, and circles. This activity will help them practice categorizing objects based on their attributes.

Preschool Grade Talking Points

  • "Today, we are going to have fun with Legos while learning about shapes!"
  • "Shapes are all around us. Can you think of any shapes you see in your everyday life?"
  • "Let's use our Legos to build different shapes. Can you make a square? How about a triangle?"
  • "Now, let's go on a shape hunt! I will give you clues, and you have to find the hidden Legos with those shapes."
  • "Great job! Now, let's sort our Legos by shape. Can you find all the squares and put them in one pile?"
  • "You are becoming a shape expert! Keep practicing and soon you will know all the different shapes."
