By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to understand the connection between sea life and music, and create their own musical composition inspired by the sea.

Materials and Prep

Materials:

  • Paper
  • Pencils or crayons
  • Access to a computer or tablet for listening to music

Prep:

  • Prepare a playlist of sea-themed music
  • Have examples of sea life pictures or books for inspiration

Activities

1. Listen and Discuss: Start by playing the sea-themed music playlist. Discuss how the music makes the student feel and what sea creatures they imagine when listening.

2. Create Sea Life Art: Using the sea life pictures or books for inspiration, have the student draw or color their favorite sea creature.

3. Musical Composition: Encourage the student to create a short musical composition that represents the movement or sounds of their chosen sea creature.

Third Grade Talking Points

  • Sea life is important to our planet. It provides homes for many animals and helps keep our oceans healthy. You can say, "Did you know that the ocean is home to many different animals? It's like a big underwater city!"
  • Music can be inspired by many things, including sea life. You can say, "Just like how a story can inspire a song, the ocean and its creatures can inspire music too!"
  • Creating art and music helps us express our feelings and ideas. You can say, "When we draw or make music, we can show others how we feel and what we think about."
