Welcome to the Vet Clinic! (5 mins)
Hello future veterinarian! Do you know what a veterinarian (or vet) does? That's right, they are special animal doctors! They help keep our pets and other animals healthy and happy. Today, YOU get to be the vet!
Meet Your Patients (10 mins)
Let's set up our vet clinic. Arrange your stuffed animals. This one can be a dog named Sparky, this one a cat named Whiskers, and maybe this one is a bunny named Hopper! (Allow student to name some animals). Vets need to know what kind of animal they are helping. Can you tell me what kind of animal Sparky is? And Whiskers? Great job!
The Check-Up (15 mins)
Okay, Dr. [Student's Name], let's give Sparky a check-up. First, let's listen to his heart with the stethoscope. Put it on his chest... thump-thump, thump-thump! A healthy heart! Now let's check his temperature with the thermometer (pretend). Beep! Looks normal! Let's check his ears with the otoscope – nice and clean! And look at his teeth – strong and white!
Let's make a note on our chart (or draw on paper): Sparky is healthy!
(Repeat check-up steps with another stuffed animal, guiding the student on using the tools and what to look for.)
What Makes Animals Healthy? (10 mins)
What do animals need to stay healthy, just like us? (Guide discussion towards: food, clean water, exercise/play, sleep, love, and visits to the vet!). Let's pretend to give Whiskers some healthy food and fresh water. Good job taking care of your patient!
Fixing Boo-Boos (10 mins)
Oh no! Hopper the bunny hopped too high and has a little scratch on his leg! What should we do, Dr. [Student's Name]? We can clean it (pretend) and put a bandage on it. Can you carefully wrap the bandage around Hopper's leg? There! All better. You are a very kind vet!
Wrap Up (5 mins)
Wow, you were a fantastic veterinarian today! You checked on your animal patients, learned what they need to stay healthy, and even fixed a boo-boo. Being a vet is an important job because we need to take good care of our animal friends. Great work, Doctor!
