Materials: Pen, paper, and access to online grammar resources.

Prep: Familiarize yourself with the different types of pronouns and their usage in English.

Activities

  • Activity 1: Pronoun Scavenger Hunt - Look for examples of different pronouns in a newspaper or online article. Write down the sentences and identify the type of pronoun used.
  • Activity 2: Pronoun Role Play - Create a short skit where each character represents a different type of pronoun (e.g., personal pronoun, possessive pronoun). Act out the skit and discuss the role of each pronoun in the dialogue.
  • Activity 3: Pronoun Quiz - Create a quiz with sentences containing pronouns. Identify the type of pronoun used in each sentence and explain its function.

Eighth Grade Talking Points

  • "Pronouns are words that take the place of nouns in a sentence. For example, instead of saying 'Mary went to the store,' we can use the pronoun 'she' and say 'She went to the store.'"
  • "There are different types of pronouns, such as personal pronouns (e.g., I, you, he, she), possessive pronouns (e.g., mine, yours, his, hers), and demonstrative pronouns (e.g., this, that, these, those)."
  • "Pronouns help us avoid repetition in writing and speech, making our language more concise and efficient."
