Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to write a descriptive paragraph about a flower, using vivid language and sensory details.
Materials and Prep
You will need a notebook or paper, a pencil, and access to a flower (either in your garden or a nearby park).
Before the lesson, familiarize yourself with the parts of a flower and some descriptive vocabulary related to flowers (e.g., petals, stamen, fragrance, vibrant, etc.).
Activities
1. Take a nature walk to find a flower that interests you. Observe its color, shape, and scent.
2. Sit next to the flower and spend a few minutes just looking at it. What does it remind you of? What emotions does it evoke?
3. Write a descriptive paragraph about the flower, using as many sensory details as possible. Describe its appearance, scent, and any emotions it brings out in you.
Seventh Grade Talking Points
- Describe the parts of a flower, such as the petals and stamen. Use descriptive words like "vibrant" and "fragrant" to bring the flower to life.
- Explain the importance of using sensory details in writing, such as describing the flower's color, shape, and scent to create a vivid image in the reader's mind.
- Encourage the student to think about how the flower makes them feel and how to convey those emotions in their writing.
