Superhero Reading Adventure: Mighty Character Traits!

Warm-Up (5 minutes):

Let's talk superheroes! Who is your favorite Marvel hero? What do you like about them? What makes them a hero? (Listen for descriptive words). Today, we're going on a reading adventure to learn about what makes superheroes special – not just their powers, but their character traits, which is a fancy way of saying what they are like on the inside!

Activity 1: Super Story Time (10-15 minutes):

Time to read about a hero in action! Let's read this superhero story together. [Choose an age-appropriate Marvel superhero book, comic, or short story, perhaps from the 'Marvel Super Hero Adventures' early reader series]. As we read, let's keep our eyes peeled for the main character – who is the story mostly about? What are they doing?

After reading: Who was the star of our story? What important thing did they do?

Activity 2: Discovering Hero Traits (10 minutes):

Great job identifying the main character! Now, let's think about *what kind* of person (or hero!) they are. What are their character traits? Were they...

  • Brave? (Did they face something scary without giving up?)
  • Kind? (Were they nice to others?)
  • Strong? (Did they use muscles or show strong determination?)
  • Smart? (Did they think of a clever plan?)
  • Helpful? (Did they help someone who needed it?)

(Discuss examples from the story that show these traits. If the story character doesn't show all, you can ask: 'Do you know another Marvel hero who is very brave/kind/smart...?') You can write these trait words down on a piece of paper.

Activity 3: Design-A-Hero Profile! (10-15 minutes):

Now it’s your turn! Grab your paper and crayons/markers. You can either draw the superhero from our story OR invent your very own superhero! Give them a cool pose. Once your drawing is ready, look at our list of character trait words. Pick 2 or 3 words that best describe your hero. Write those words near your drawing. Maybe your hero is 'Brave' and 'Helpful', or 'Smart' and 'Kind'!

Wrap-up & Sharing Time (5 minutes):

Wow, look at that amazing hero! Tell me about them. What character traits did you choose? Why did you pick those specific traits for your hero? What was your favorite part about learning character traits today? You showed super reading and thinking skills!
