Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to recognize and produce words with the vowel sound "u" in them.

Materials and Prep

Materials: Paper, pencil

Prep: None

Activities

1. Word Hunt: Have the student go on a word hunt around the house to find and write down words with the "u" sound. Encourage them to find at least 5 words.

2. Draw and Write: Ask the student to draw a picture of something they like that has the "u" sound in its name, then write the word below the picture.

3. Story Time: Read a short story together and have the student raise their hand every time they hear a word with the "u" sound. After the story, discuss the words they found.

First Grade Talking Points

  • "Today, we are going to learn about the vowel sound 'u'. Can you say 'u' like in 'cup'?"
  • "Let's look around the room and find things that have the 'u' sound. Can you find things like 'mug' or 'sun'?"
  • "Now, let's draw a picture of something you like that has the 'u' sound in its name. Can you write the word below the picture?"
  • "When we read our story, I want you to listen for words with the 'u' sound. Raise your hand every time you hear one."
