Alphabet Animals Safari: A Sound Adventure!

Get Ready! Let's pretend we are going on a safari to find amazing alphabet animals!

Warm-up: Animal Sounds March (5 mins)

Let's march around the room and make some animal sounds! Can you roar like a lion (R!)? Hiss like a snake (S!)? Buzz like a bee (B!)? This gets us ready to listen for sounds.

Activity 1: Animal Sound Match-Up (15 mins)

  1. Spread out a few animal picture cards (start with 3-5 familiar animals like Cat, Dog, Bear).
  2. Show the first animal card (e.g., Cat). Ask, "What animal is this?" (Cat!) "What sound does 'Cat' start with?" Emphasize the /k/ sound. "C-c-c-cat!"
  3. Help the student find the letter 'C' card that matches the /k/ sound.
  4. Repeat with the other selected animal cards (e.g., Dog - /d/ - D, Bear - /b/ - B). Make the sounds together!
  5. Mix up the letter cards and see if the student can match them back to the correct animal picture based on the starting sound.

Activity 2: Safari Story Time (10 mins)

  1. Settle in for story time! Introduce the chosen animal storybook. "Look at the cover! What animals do you think we might read about?"
  2. Read the story aloud with expression, pointing to the pictures.
  3. Pause occasionally to ask simple questions like, "What animal is that?" or "What is the bear doing?"
  4. After reading, ask: "Who was your favorite animal in the story?" or "What happened first in the story?"

Activity 3: Create Your Own Safari Animal (10-15 mins)

  1. Let the student choose one of the animals/letters learned today.
  2. Provide construction paper and crayons/markers.
  3. Encourage the student to draw their chosen animal.
  4. Help them write the first letter of the animal's name near their drawing (e.g., draw a Bear, write 'B').
  5. Optional: Cut out the animal drawing to make a simple puppet or mask.

Wrap-up: Safari Show and Tell (5 mins)

Have the student show off their animal creation! Ask them again, "What animal did you make?" (Bear!) "And what sound does 'Bear' start with?" (/b/!) "What letter makes the /b/ sound?" (B!) Congratulate them on their great sound safari adventure!
