Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to compare and analyze little athletics results using basic statistical concepts.
Materials and Prep
- Pencil and paper
- Little athletics results data (e.g., times for running events, distances for jumping events)
- No prior knowledge required
Activities
1. Collect little athletics results data from a recent event or competition.
2. Organize the data into a table or list, including the names of participants and their results.
3. Calculate the average time or distance for a specific event, and discuss what it represents.
4. Identify the fastest/slowest participant, and compare their results with others.
5. Create a simple bar graph or pictograph to visually represent the results.
Fourth Grade Talking Points
- "Statistics helps us understand and compare information about how well people do in sports and other activities."
- "We can use the average to find a typical result, like the average time it takes to run a race."
- "When we make a graph, it helps us see the results in a picture, so we can compare them easily."
- "We can also find out who did the best or worst in an event by looking at the results."
