Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to identify and discuss basic information about Native American culture and traditions through reading and related activities.

Materials and Prep

Materials:

  • Picture book about Native Americans
  • Blank paper and crayons

Preparation:

  • Review the picture book to familiarize yourself with the content
  • Prepare a comfortable reading area for the student

Activities

1. Read a picture book about Native Americans to the student, discussing the illustrations and basic concepts as you go along.

2. After reading, ask the student to draw a picture of something they learned about Native American culture from the book.

Kindergarten Grade Talking Points

  • Native Americans are the first people who lived in America. They had different customs and traditions. You can say, "Native Americans were the first people to live in America. They had special customs and traditions that made their culture unique."
  • They lived in different types of homes, such as teepees and longhouses. You can say, "Native Americans lived in different kinds of homes. Some lived in teepees, which are tall tents, and others lived in longhouses, which are long buildings."
  • They used natural resources for food, clothing, and tools. You can say, "Native Americans used things from nature for their food, clothes, and tools. They were very resourceful and used what they found around them."
