Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to understand the basic science behind making bath bombs and create their own bath bomb.
Materials and Prep
Materials needed:
- Baking soda
- Citric acid
- Cornstarch
- Epsom salt
- Food coloring
- Essential oils
- Water
- Mixing bowl
- Molds (can be muffin tins or silicone molds)
- Measuring spoons
- Activity area should be covered to avoid mess
Activities
1. Discuss with the student the concept of mixing different ingredients to create a chemical reaction that forms a bath bomb. Show each ingredient and explain its role in the process.
2. Guide the student in measuring and combining the dry ingredients in a mixing bowl, then adding a few drops of food coloring and a few drops of essential oil for fragrance.
3. Gradually add a small amount of water to the mixture while stirring continuously until it reaches a consistency that can be easily molded.
4. Help the student pack the mixture into the molds and leave them to dry for at least 24 hours.
5. Once dry, demonstrate how to carefully remove the bath bombs from the molds and discuss the science behind the fizzing reaction when placed in water.
Kindergarten Grade Talking Points
- "When we mix the ingredients together, they make a special reaction that creates a bath bomb."
- "We use different colors and smells to make the bath bomb fun and nice to use."
- "We add a little bit of water to help the ingredients stick together."
- "After we make the bath bomb, we wait for it to dry and then we can use it in the bath."
