Materials and Prep
Materials: Clock with movable hands, storybook related to time (e.g. "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" by Eric Carle)
Prep: Familiarize yourself with the storybook and prepare discussion questions related to time.
Activities
- Read the storybook together and discuss the sequence of events in the story in relation to time (e.g. morning, afternoon, evening).
- Use the clock to demonstrate the concept of time by moving the hands to show different times of the day mentioned in the story.
- Ask the student to identify and circle words related to time in the storybook (e.g. day, night, morning, afternoon).
First Grade Talking Points
- "Today we are going to read a special story about a little caterpillar and his adventures. We will learn about different times of the day like morning, afternoon, and night."
- "Let's look at the clock and see how the hands move to show different times. Can you show me what time it is when the sun is up in the sky?"
- "Can you find and circle the words in the story that tell us about time, like when the caterpillar eats food during the day and sleeps at night?"
